Any advice on the following problem:
280sl in storage and not run 5 years; electric fuel pump runs, provides plenty of fuel to cold start injector, and fuel coming out of return line to tank. However, there is no fuel exiting the top of the injection pump at each fuel line union connection. Thought it might be the injection pump ball pressure valves for each line; could they be stuck? Don't have the extractor tool (MB 000 589 623300 or Bosch EF 8117A) to take out and clean the ball valves. Think this might be it? Any idea where I can buy the tool noted if my guess is correct? Though I had the tool for years it managed to walk sometime before the last two times I needed it. Both times I needed it to get to a stuck piston. (single cylinder misfire, due to no fuel). Both times I got the valve out by rocking it back and forth with two small screwdrivers. The valve is only held by a teflon o-ring seal.
I seriously doubt that the valves are the problem. Fuel being incompressable it would have to go somewhere if the pistons were going up and down. The pistons are pushed up but sprung down; sort of like the intake and exhaust valves. I suspect that the fuel evaporated and the residue has stuck the pistons up. Another posibility is that the shut-off solenoid is powered. (not all pumps have this solenoid. If you can get a valve out crank over the motor and see if the fuel pistons go up and down. ------------------ Steve Brotherton Owner 24 bay BSC Bosch Master, ASE master L1 26 years MB technician |

Also check if the rack is free. Front cap on pump can be removed to check rack.
280SL pumps were susceptical to moisture as they were oil fed from the engine crankcase, whereas the 230/250 pumps have their own oil res. and are sealed to outside moisture. |
