sporadic starting problem

My fathers 89 300se has a starting problem. The car will start most of the time and sometimes it just does not do anything when you turn it over. It also has a tendency to shut of once in a while. i have replaced the throttle sensor and still nothing. Putting in new plugs did help but eventually the problem came back.

Does it stall while driving or only when coming to a stop? If while driving, get a new fuel pump relay and check the current draw on the fuel pumps -- if one is going bad and pulling too much juice, it will toast the relay.

If it only happens while coming to a stop, remove and clean the idle control valve and replace the associated hoses if hard and leaking.

Probably the relay.
