Hello -

I recently bought a 1995 S500 and have not yet had the opportunity to purchase a service manual. I thought that I would change the oil this weekend and bought an oil filter at my local parts store today and noticed that it was a catridge type. I have changed many oil filters on Mercedes E cars but am a little confused as to how to change the
catridge. The filter came with 2 rubber o-rings and a brass washer. What
are these for?

Any guidance would be appreciated as to location of the oil filter and are any special tools needed for replacement (how to remove).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm still learning my way around the Mercedes V-8's.

well you need to get a wrench that will take off the filter housing. I picked up one that was sized to my oil filter housing, that takes a 3/4 inch socket driver. With an extension, it unscrews easily.

The oil filter housing should look like a metal cylynder somewhere in the engine compartment. On my car it is in the back towards the drivers side. behind the air box

The o Rings replace the ones on the oil filter housing, make sure you oil the o rings before you put them on. a light coating should suffice.

The copper washer is a new one for the drain plug.

Actually the 119 motor doesn't need the large oil filter socket that the 104 motors take. The Aluminum oil filter housing sits at the right front of the motor and is accessed from the top. The housing has a flat Aluminum lid on it held by a 13mm wrench size long bolt through the center. The little o-rings go on the bolt and the big one seals the lid.

The metal ring is for the pan plug.

The biggest problem I see on these filters is that unless very carefull you wind up with a mess as the filter is at an angle and pulling the top allows oil to run over and accumulate on the lower engine compartment cover. I would advise removing and cleaning that covers as it probably has the remains of numerous changes left on it.

I don't usually change oil but I have done a couple 500s. I think if you drain the engine oil and hold the top on as you remove the bolt, the oil will drain into the pan after the bolt is removed and then remove the top. I have never tried this as it takes too much time and the mess is easier to clean in a shop setting.

I have to write this fast before I go to my second Thanksgiving dinnner in 2 days.

Three things I'd like to add to the previous replies: 1)The (2)O-rings both fit onto the metal cap of the oil filter housing (lube them with clean oil before installing), 2)lay an old shop rag or several paper towels below the filter housing before you remove the cap to catch any old oil spillage, and 3) torque the filter housing bolt to spec with a torque wrench

When doing my 1995 S420, I use a 3/8-inch drive socket wrench and extension bar to get to the oil filter housing bolt, and a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to reinstall. Sorry I don't have the torque figure here in front of me, and I don't want to give you a wrong number off the top of my head, but I can get it to you later if you don't have it. Oh, and have 2 oil drain pans to catch all the oil (8-plus quarts).
