W124 E420 - Help Diagnose this please

1994 E420

This is what happened.

Car stalled out after a perfectly normal day. Idled erratically upon restarting it. Stepping on the accelerator (at idle) causes hesitation. but if held at 3000rpm, runs smooth. Strong foul odor, and a touch of black smoke out of exhaust. After a few attempts, car stared and ran normally and was able to drive 70 miles with no signs of a problem.

Car has 139K. Throttle actuator was replaced. No check engine light. No problem when starting cold. When warm, car still starts instantly.

any idea what the heck could be going on?

How about the mass air meter?

just pulled fault codes 10 and 16. Seems like you were right suginami. Thanks.

Where exactly is the mass air flow sensor BTW? Fastlane quotes $300 something dollars....is that about right? If I simply measure the resistance between the two terminals, will it give me an accurate idea as to if the sensor is really bad or not?

Mass air meters are somewhere between the black plastic air pipe and the air filter.

On a M119, I think the MAF is underneath the filter box, it is the hot wire screened by a metal mesh.

Whats Up with code 16: Closed throttle position information defective. Is there another sensor that regulates this or does it all stem from the same problem.

MAF MUST be behind filters, not before

or else the wire would foul within a few thousand miles.

I think I've seen it when I've taken off the filter box off the top of the engine. Looks fairly easy to get to (a rarity on this engine).
