I have a 1989 420SEL and would lioke any information re: fixing cruise control lever, it will not spring return to a neutral position. Cruise works fine all but for that non-return thing, I was told that there wsa a particular procedure of removing the steering wheel and not setting off the air-bag, can some one help with this ?

You have to replace the switch. If you are careful with the bag and do not turn on the ignition switch with the bag out of the car, you will be fine. I have never seen one blow when it wasn't supposed to. (You do need a special tool to remove the bolt that holds the steering wheel down. It is best done by an experienced tech.

This looks like exactly the problem that just began to occure with my '87 300TD. The CC activation lever springs back from "set/acc", but not from "deacce.". Can anyone add more info on the switch R&R. How did it go for you, Tim?

I have not replaced the switch as of this date, however I have removed the air-bag and replaced same, I will require a puller of some sort to remove the wheel then I will replace the switch, Does anyone know the cost for the replacement switch?? OEM or After market?
Thanks Tim LaWarre |

Tim, try the parts shop for a quote. I think that switch is about $87.00, but not sure..

Appreciate the input but the cost will override the necessity at this time, I just got finished battling cancer and am selling cars at the local Chrysler,Dodge Jeep dealer. So my income is not that good but is coming along well. I will call my local Benz dealer and get a quote.
Thanks again Tim LaWarre |

I finally replaced my cruise control switch yesterday and it went well.
The bolts behind the steering wheel holding the airbag and horn device need a star drive and the bolt to the steering wheel needs a 10mm alan wrench and a breaker bar. Mine was locked with lock-tight and took a bit of effort. After that the steering wheel simply lifted off. You also have to remove the underdash to get to the other end of the plug. That was quick for me because I've done it several times now. ------------------ -Mike '87 300TD Turbo |
