I have a 1997 C280 Sport, how can I determine which tranny is in this car? I have searched the forum and it appears it may be a 722.6 but want to be sure.

Though I wouldn't know your model if it ran over me, I went to Fastlane (above) and clicked your year, make & model. From there, I clicked on transmission. I next selected trans mount and it listed the transmission as "722.604". Hope that helps.

PS I try to use Fastlane to help me identify parts via their photos

In my owner's manual pack, I have the "build sheet", which lists the motor number, tranny number (and lot's of other unintelligable babble...)

I thought their may be a site that by VIN I could get model. I bought the car used and don't have original owners pack. From reading past posts it appeared they may have changed tranny's half way through 1997 due to problems with 96's and early 97's

If, on your shifter assembly there is a small rocker switch marked W and S, it is a 722.6.

I do have a S & W so it is a 722.6. I understand there were some upgrades to the software for that model. Do you know if that is something that would only be covered under warranty?

ONLY under warranty? I don't understand the question. I'm sure it could still be updated if there is an update, usually on an something of this vintage, an upgrade would be a change of the control module. There were also some mods done to a part on top of the valve body called the conductor plate, and a magnetic pad can be "thrown in" to the bottom of the oil pan if you ever have it off.
Personally I don't recommend changing the tranny fluid (neither does Benz), but if you wanted to change the fluid on an original 97 722.6, keep these couple changes in mind too. Also there are a few caps that go over the shift valves that you can add too, this should be done if you replace the conductor plate.
But just research around a bit before deciding to change ANYTHING if the tranny is shifting correctly.

Hi Gilly,

"Personally I don't recommend changing the tranny fluid (neither does Benz)"... is that for particular model/year, or for all ? The MB maintenance booklet (W124 E320/E420 for example) asks that the tranny fluid and filter to be changed every 30,000 miles / 48,000 km.

It's no secret, it's a hotly debated topic here (and elsewhere). This is the recommendation for the 722.6 transmission though, MB never put it in the 124 chassis though, so change away!

Thanks Gilly for clarifying that 'no change' is for 722.6. Doing a bit of search I realize mine is 722.369, so change away as you say.
