E280 Starting Problems

Can you shed any light onto a problem I am having with my 94 E280 Auto. To be honest the car spends most if it's time garaged, so doesn't get out on long runs very often. If I go on a short run of a few miles and then turn the engine off, if I try to restart it after 3 or 4 minutes, it just turns over but will not start. If I leave it for a further few minutes then it starts no problem. It seems to be when the engine isn't fully up to normal running temp'. If I go on a longer run so it is up to temp' and then turn it off for a few minutes it starts again no problem.

Possible OVP relay
Do a search on 'OVP '

Thanks for the replies Arthur. Do you know if there is a simple test to identify if the OVP is at fault? I have just quickly checked it and everything looks ok. The fuse is intact and the contacts and aluminium body are in good condition with no water ingress or corrosion evident.

There are two test

The first is to verify if it is the original .. if so, replace it-regardless.
you will have to pull it to see the part # on the side.

The second test requires a highly technical approach... this is the
Tappity-Tap test..
Next time it does not start, you lightly tap it with a screw-driver handle and retry the start proceedure..

oh, I almost forgot..
This tapping tecnique is best done to Standard Benz/Joplin metering..

"Lord ... won't-cha-buy-me...aaaa ..Merc..say......days- benz.... oh Lord ..."

The tempo would be a slow , Blues feel..

I can't read the number clearly for laughing! It's definitely an MB original, so I'll get myself a new one and post an update in a few days. Thanks again for your advise.

Just noticed that you recommend the revised part no 000 540 67 45 over the original 000 540 52 45. When you enter both codes in the shop they throw up the same parts ref P2056-70038. What is the difference then?

I'd bet on the OVP as well. It has happened twice now to my 1994 C280. Same M104 engine as you have. A very simple DIY.

The old part is NLA , so when you enter it , the replacement part automatically comes up as the repacement part.
ie... you can't get the old ones, cuz they are discontinued. [ as, in the trash can, where they belonged from the start]
Like to have a nickle for every one of those , too.......

It is the original part no. I'll stick a new one in (I hope it's readily available here in the UK) and let you know. Fingers crossed. Although from what you've said it seems highly probable that it is the OVP and replacing it should resolve the problem.

Arthur Dalton 10-17-2004 12:55 PM

Very Good .....
Old part# OVP should get changed , regardless of diagnosis, just due to the fact that the old one is not a "Will " it fail part , but rather a "When"..
.. and they will cause all kinds of electrical gremlins.
Good Luck.....

Well, I managed to obtain the part from my local MB dealer. It is now installed and so far, so good. It certainly looks very promising. It cost just over £40, so about $72 US, which isn't too bad. Thanks for the advice.
