95 C280 Rough Idle

Hello: Had oil leak repaired at 65k front engine gasket as well as valve..5 mins after I got the car back it idle rough (didn't happen before)..drove right back..20 mins later..was running fine: reason from mech that maybe one of the ignition coil is going bad..anyhow, 3 days later..now same thing.. CEL not on..replaced plugs..been doing a lot of reading..thanks in advance for any help....

For starters , change the 3 plug connectors under each coil and see how it does ...cheap

Good advice Arthur. We will often change them when we change plugs for two reasons. The first is we get blamed when the POSs can't take the physical handling of removal to access plugs (or head gaskets). Second when they are working there ain't snowballs chance in H of diagnosing them so you are doubly screwed. The shop gets blamed for causing the problem and then gets blamed for being stupid when they can't ID the non existing problem when it comes back, working for the moment.

Great..Is that a dealer part? Or could I just go to Kragens or something?
Thanks again...

SB

Yeah , I hear ya
I tell everyone to just consider them auto change whenever doing plugs...
or even touching them..
I like the BERU replacments..
Like you say.. this is one time that a part change as part of diagnosis wins the Race....
Wish I had a nickle for all the money guys spend on the big buck parts before they get to changing these.. that's why my post opens with "For Starters".....b/g

Never had any problem with my '97C280. 186,000 miles but I never have let a dealer work on the car because they usually come back with more problems. That said, I might suggest you buy a new gas cap as I once forgot to put mine back and expeienced a rouughness. With the new cap, car ran flawlessly. BTW why do so many MB's seem to leak oil? Mine never has and I would think the geniuses at the factory would figure this out. My 28 year old Chevy does'nt leak anything. What the deal?

Hi guys: Was wondering if there was any install advice for this part...seems to be stuck on there..(to the ignition coil)..don't want to force it too much...should I use a lubicant?
thanks

Arthur Dalton 10-18-2004 02:56 PM

WD and twist

mr.thi03 10-18-2004 10:16 PM

I took it a part and discovered that the two part looked different..on close inspection: the original part was a 35 not a 36...installed it anyway and still has a rough idle..taking it to an independent tomorrow..they seem to think that one of the coils is bad..which one..they don't know..is there any difference between the 000 159 35 42 part number and the 36? Anyhow, this is getting beyond me now..thanks for all the help.....

Wiring Harness

found out that the harness is completely corroded and not giving the correct ground to the coils to fire correctly...they want $1010 for the harness..that doesn't sound right...what do you think..if not, where should I go?
thanks.....

....aaaaah, the dreaded wiring harness issue. All 1993-1995 engines are plagued by this.

You can check with Phil here at Fastlane, but the last pricing I heard on engine wiring harnesses was about $500-ish.

A shop should charge 2.5 - 3.0 hours to replace it.
