Let the flaming begin on my new purchase.
Hello board, as you all know, I have sold my W124. I miss the car, but I have purchased something else. I am ready for the flaming to begin, and I am open to all your comments. Well, I now drive a...2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. It is pretty nice, and a lot bigger than my W124. Any care to start the flaming?

Excellent car. My mother has one as her weekend/summer toy in the garage up on blocks right now. It's a 2000 SS with 19,000 miles on it... every option.
Make sure that if its VIN falls in the turn signal switch, oil pressure sender, or fuel pressure regulator recalls that they are repaired. The fuel pressure regulator went out on ours about a year ago and required craploads of cranking to start. ~D.J.~ |

I'll start then! It is a bit weird-looking. The back end from the side looks like it's from a different car.
I'm sure it'll be less hassle to keep running than a Merc though. I hope you get many years of trouble-free motoring out of it. You'll probably end up buying another MB one day :) |

I'm not too fond of the styling, but I like GM cars.
I'm a particular fan of the 3.8 liter pushrood V6. My former company had a fleet of them as company cars - about 50 of them. They were late 80's custlass', with that engine. They all got 200,000 miles on them, but they went through water pumps, alternators, and transmissions every 60,000 - 90,000 miles. |

Is that the one with the engine made in the P.R.C.?
The newer 3.4 V6 is made in China. Not saying anything bad about it, of course, but it is a rough and nasty bugger.
I do understand wanting to buy basic, cheap transportation. Every few years, usually after I have ridden a bicycle in freezing drizzle without gloves, I enjoy the feeling of driving in a warm dry car, any car. Then I remember that I love mechanical things, clever things, and that I love driving. So I go back to my original attraction - interesting cars. At 100,000 miles the interior will have fallen apart and the tranny will be shaky, if not replaced yet, and you will be facing running gear problems and parts availablity problems.
GM cars are fine it you only keep them a couple years, will drive you nuts if you expect it to run any decent amount of time -- the heater blower in the new Chevy Coronado truck I rented a couple weeks ago was squealing at 40,000 miles. I expect things like that in my 300D at 200,000, but not nearly new! You'll be back in a Benz sooner or later.... Peter |

gms powertrains are certainly up to scratch. dont diss em, they will keep going and going and going.,
but alternator, starters, etc. interior looking like the refuge of some yet undiscovered wild animal. and just plain looking nasty, give it five years and you will start to see a change. |
