OK!! Found a solenoid valve on the fire wall of my 300SDL is this THE mono valve I have heard so much about?? Was not in good shape as the large rubber piece was torn. Took the C clip off and removed the lower rubber piece and the screen portion, left the top piece around the edge , thought that it might be a gasket also. Anyway, will this work until a replacement is recieved without causing any problems!! AND is this the mono valve or something else. Had two wires going to a little plug on top.
Also, are front tranny seals an expensive thing to do?? Might have been why the price was right, wondered why the guy was interested in hosing down his garage where it was parked, thought it was from the dog.

Yes, You found it. That is the mono valve.

YOU need to replace the insert!!! They are cheap. We have them in the partsshop and will send it to your door.

I would not do the tranny seals on my own, this requires specail tools and specific torques.

Thanks for the info. Benzmac I e-mailed you and will look for your reply and will get those parts ordered. Looks as if I will have a number of things to buy. Think I should call my son and tell him to bring the old 300D back and we'll trade. ;)

The transmission seal will run around $800.00. While you are at it, you might as well have the rear seals replaced too. The expence is mostly in the R&R of the tranny, usually around $500.00. Doing the rear seal will add about $100.00.

From exerience, I suggest you take any MB tranny to the dealer. Not only are they better equipped and understand what to do,they will warrant the parts for 1 year.

It's important to carefully consider if a re-seal is appropriate. If it doesn't shift perfectly, you might be wise to replace it with a rebuild. That will run you $2500.00,but will be cheaper in the long run if you plan on keeping the car.

Good luck!

My independent shop quoted me $1500 to rebuild my existing transmission, or $2200 for a rebuilt. The difference being, a week in the shop for them to rebuild it, or a day to swap. I'm not eager to spend that kind of $$$$ unless it really begins to shift crappy. My shop did tell me to get it done if I hear grinding or anything, but I figure I can wait for this to happen. Right now my main problem is a very slow transition from reverse to drive when it's cold. I'm fine unless I have to back out of a parking place when the tranny is cold.

Seems to shift ok, all the shifts are crisp and don't seem to delay. It had seals done at around 150K and is now at 231K. i will go to MB for the job if required. Last one cost 600.00 according to MB record.
