Non MB ? Honda Civic Help

I don't want to clog this forum with non-MB items so my e-mail address is snellings@adelphia.net

A friend has a '95 Honda Civic and called me for help removing a half-shaft. I am going up to attempt to help him tomorrow and expect that it should be straightforward, however if anyone can shed some pre-arrival light on what I am going to be looking at, please do so. Thanks.

PS If this is considered inappropriate use of our forum, feel free to delete this thread. I would certainly understand.

Assuming front axle in a FWD, release the nut holding the axle to the hub. If you don't have an impact wrench, remove the wheel, remove the cap covering the nut, remove the center cap of the wheel, replace the wheel, lower the car, hold the car with the brakes while you loosen the nut. Lots of leverage will do it. Don't forget to remove the cotter pin. See if you can snake the axle out of the hub. If there's not enough range of contortion, undo the hub from the strut. That should do it. Then take a BIG screwdriver or crow bar and pry the axle from the tranny. Take care not to nick the tranny seal. Maybe best to have a tranny seal ready in case. installation is the reverse of removal except there's no prying involved.

Take a good look at how the old axle fits so you know you've installed the new axle properly. You should hear and/or feel the circlip engage in the tranny.

Thanks. Yes, it is a FWD. Your description confirmed it should be straightforward. He is trying to do a R&R and though he says he has everything removed, yet he could not get the axle to release. When he told me he has even tried hammering on it, I winced. I'll see tomorrow.

Have him soak the splines in the hub in penetrating oil until you get there. You can rent/borrow a tool from a car parts store to push out the axle from the hub.

I told him to give it a good dose of PB Blaster tonight and I have an improvised version of an axle driver that should work. I didn't dare to ask if he used a buffer between his hammer??? Soft-sided hammer is not something he has.

Thanks again and I'm certain Matt thanks you also . . . good hearted kid that is not afraid to tackle projects -$-$-$
