Folks,
I have a 92 500SEL (140 Body) with the door close assist pump that fails. I am able to pull the #9 fuse and replace it allowing it to work for a few days/week, but would like to fix it eventually. A new one ranges between $400 and $800 depending on who does it or whether I do it, but what I want to know is: Can this unit be fixed? Is there a common problem in the system that I should look at? Is there an aftermarket for this?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Joel

Joel,
Sorry to have to tell you this, if you don't already know, but the 92-93 S class was/is the largest maintenance problem car made by MB. Been there with my 92 300SE and with the closing assist pump. Yes, there are rebuilders that do them with the same warranty, one year, that a MB dealer has and about half the cost.

For more information on this and other related S class problems, do a SEARCH on the question.

Any chance you'd know of an outfit that does this? Do I need to go through the hassle of pressure checking the lines or is this likely to be a pump/circuit issue?

Joel,
More than likely your fuse blows periodacally due to the compressor in the closing assist pump starting to bind/drag causing a power drain over the fuse rating.
When I pulled mine out it was totally locked up. The design is to encapsulate the pump in a foam tomb which is then in a plastic housing. There is no way for this pump to breathe and rid itself of electrical ozones.
Yes, it runs very quietly but self destructs!

There are rebuilders, some advertise in Star, that can do it. I used a place here in Charlotte called Europarts Unlimited but removed it myself. Their ph # is 704-847-4130
The pump is in the left front of the trunk behind the Bose amp. and the car may be driven without it in place.

Good luck..have you done the evaporator yet?
