Speedometer cable

Hello everyone

Where does the speedometer/tachometer cable insert into the transmission?
I spent yesterday claustrophobically underneath the car (no jack stands) trying to find the cable to disconnect it so I could get to a beeper thats been attached to my indicators in the instrument cluster and driving me insane.

The Haynes manual says it's on the left side of the transmission. I'm pretty sure I found the two cables together in a sheath but there was no way I could see the 10mm nut the manual says connects it. All I could find was what looked like a black rectangle type thing, what's that?

Alternatively, I read somewhere on this site that you can disconnect the speedo by getting access through the speaker cavity on the dashboard, how much easier is that?

this model does not have a cable, it is electrically driven. you can just pull the cluster.

Speedometer Cable

That would explain a lot, thanks.
Hmmm, the cluster is loose but something's definitely holding it back, I assumed it was the cable.
The right hand side of the cluster moves a centimetre or two but the other side won't budge.
How does it come out?
I'm reading in the manual about making a hook from a welding rod to get between the cluster and the facia and pull it out.

Speedo

No worries CArson, your advice did no harm.
I got it out without disconnecting the cable and without any other tools, the cluster came out pretty easily just by pulling at it with my hands and I unscrewed the speedo from inside.
I was looking to see if there was an obvious reason my tacho isn't working. I can't work out how the tacho works, there was no cable attached to it. Surely there must be a cable to it somewhere?

re: Speedo - is attached to the transmission near the rear of the housing, secured by a pinch fitting with a 10mm bolt that must be completely removed to detach the cable. It is also secured in the driver's footwell by a clip behind the brake pedal, and should be at least disconnected there before removing the instrument cluster (manual says to disconnect at transmission as well, lest you stretch the cable housing).

Sounds like you found the vacuum line to the transmission modulator, the other black cable should be the speedo one.

re: tach - this I believe is indeed an electronic signal from the engine. Don't know much more than this, unfortunately.
