Dead starter? 1990 560SEC

Hi,
I read through the posts for starters and didn't see this problem described:

A few months back the starter refused to turn over. There was no warning, just one day it stopped. I checked the gear position and the normal issues, and then gave up and tapped on the starter with the lug wrench.

Sure enough, it started right away. I had no problems for a few months, and then today it just up and refused to turn. I hear a clicking kinda noise in the engine bay, some noises that sound like relays, but 0% starter engage.

I know this is probably a dumb question, but is it possible that this could be a solenoid? Is it even possible to buy the solenoid individually? I know on my 1982 240D the solenoid went out frequently but the motor was fine...

Help?

Also, where do you find a 36" extension? And do you need to take the exhaust off to get the starter out of there?

Correction

Sorry, I should have been clear: the starter doesn't spin at all. I said "doesn't engage" and that is not accurate. When I turn the key-- nada, zip, zero.

Thanks!

Check the cable connections at the starter and the battery. Clean and sand the ends. If that works make sure you coat the connections to prevent futher problems.

Thank You

You know, as simple as that is, I hadn't thought of it.

Guess what - it was none of the above

In case this helps anyone, it turns out that I had a faulty aftemarket alarm starter kill which was working overtime.

Wired around it and the car is 100% again.
