Transmission sound '94 E320 ???

When the tranny is cold there is no sound and no difference between position D and R when car is in standstill and i am on the breakes. Everything is running as it should when cold Once the car is warmed to op temp the engine seems to be working too hard in D-everything is fine in R. It's like the engine is running to high or the converter is not "opening" up enough.....there are slight vibrations and it sound like there was a little leak in the exhaust!(there is none)
Any thoughts??
Reinhard
