Transmission not Starting in 2nd
I have several question about my 85 380SE. !st history bought with 135k on it at 126k new chains had been put in have receipts {dealer did it}. 3rd owner sold me the car because all 3 could not make run right. I found vacum leakes everywhere. I replaced all ends and just spent testing. This fixed most problems. But here are the bad ones. My injection sytem, It leaks down it's preasure, I think it is internal has new pump and accumalator. To get a smooth Idle I have to adjust the air fuel till it smells like rotten egs. But it runs very good. Suggestions?
Next In vacum chasing I found the transmission modulator not holding vacum also. I replaced with the one that was on it. Dealer said it was not right but someone probably used it to make tranny work right. It would shift so hard I thought I had my old hopped up Turbo 400 B&M back. Went back with original one and have adjusted on it and the bowden cable for days I'm bored. I have it smooth but it will not start off in 2nd like it is supossed to. It will take off with the lightest pressure like you are in a race. It will go back so far that it flares ,so I now that I'm getting a pressure change. Even with bowden cable unhooked no 2nd gear take off. It also gets awful gas mileage compared to my 90 420sel. 15-16 compared to 19-21. I have gotten as bad as 12 driving it very hard. 420 worst is 15. Other than that great car and in perfect shape. Giving it to my 16 year old daughter. Very safe for her. Sorry for being so long Thanks Alan |

Fuel pressure leakdown is most likely the pressure regulator, but the accumulator could be bad as well.
If it smells of rotten eggs when it runs smoothly, I would suspect vac leaks at the manifold half connections and/or injector seals and possibly the idle control valve. Another possibility is the plastic boot between the throttle body and manifold. Set the idle mixture to spec and then look at the spark plugs -- if they are different colors, you have a leak OR a dripping injector -- dribbly injectors will drive you nuts getting idle mix correct, but will usually work just fine off idle. If one leaks, the mixture will be too lean for the other cylinders when the CO is correct. Peter
