M119 Oil Tubes
Often see reference/explanation of the topside oil tubes for the M119 engine... especially how they fail and drop oil pressure to the topside of the motor. Recently pulled my valve covers in order to check the tubes and the condition of my chain.
I've attached a pix that clearly shows the tubes in order to clarify where/what these are for achive purposes. This motor has 105K on it. Hope this helps.

You want to inspect the rockerarms too carefully!
I understand they can pit before the camshaft is damaged. I was thinking it was all the earlier V8's which had oiler problems. I'll be there soon- I've been looking for a ultra clean example. Michael

inetd-
Not sure what color the o-rings are on my motor... I didn't pull any of the tubes... just checked them while I was checking the chain stretch. I grabbed the pix of the individual tube off the 'net; it didn't come from my motor. All went back together fine. The valve cover gasket on these motors is pretty elaborate and looks prone to leak, but I've been running 0-40W Mobil 1 without any problems/leaks. Only fluid leak on the motor is a slight weap from the lower oil pan gasket. Somebody tightened the allen bolts way too much and has ruined the gasket. Never drips; just gets damp between oil changes. Unfortunately, MB made the lower pan so it can't be removed without lifting the engine to get to the forward bolts. Actually, my motor mounts are a bit compressed. When I change the filter, I need to shift the motor ever so slightly to the driver's side to get the cover out. Its no big deal but have new mounts and pan gasket on the shelf... will do both at the same time in the Spring.

The problem with the oiler tubes is a little plug on the end of each one tends to come out on it's own, I guess from the constant oil pressure. Not sure if they have changed them any if at all, the new ones I installed had the exact same part number. Once the plugs start popping out you will know, car sounds like a welfare mom's old buick.
Funny how many things are the same, giving you the same problems that is, between my 126 and my 140. Disintegrating plastic cam oiler parts, petrified hoses, leaking steering gearbox, freon leaks and the list goes on,,,

KenP, that's a GREAT pic . . .
of the M119 engine! I'm going to borrow it, if I may, to use on my web page under MENU#19 "the tick-tick that aggravates"!
I put new valve cover gaskets and then realized that I didn't have a good pic of the engine's 'infamous' oil tubes. Thanks. |

I had a good . . .
laugh over the first pdf (print3.pdf). It said ". . If it is noted that a cover is missing on a oil bridge, replace the cover"!
Now how would you go about that???? I've lost two (2) 'covers' from two oil tubes in my car and I've NEVER found them. And if I did, there is NO way to re-use them. Don't know who wrote that but it's good for a laugh! The 'real' Mercedes TSB is on my page; MENU#19 in BLUE. |

Jim-
Hi Great to hear from you. Of course you may use the pix. The original is high resolution but pretty large... Is the one posted sufficient? If not, I can send to you any way/size you wish. Best regards,

I have the metal oiler tubes on my M119 engine. Can I just replace the rubber, o-rings to help keep the oiler tubes in place? If so, is there a special material the rubber o-rings are made from that I should look for?
Thanks.

I'm sure you know the . . .
old saying; if it ain't broke, don't fix it! In your case, it fits like a glove.
I almost postive that you can't JUST get the rubber o-rings; you would need to buy the complete oil tube. Yours must be a '92 or younger because MB stopped using the 'good-stuff' and went to molded pieces. The metal pieces won't change shape / shrink as the plastic CAN do over lots of time and temperature. So there's no need to replace them or the o-rings. Just relax and toast yourself to a job well-done. |
