124 cross-over hose from thermostat housing to cylinder head

my uncle's 90 e300 has a leaking radiator hose. It's the small one crosing over from the thermostat housing to the cylinder head.... how in the heck do I put the new one on there????? I'm in KS right now and scheduled to return to TX this evening, I'd hate to leave the car here unfixed....please help
The hose is about 2.4 inches long and the gap between the 2 spaces is like 5mm apart....

It is my understanding that one must remove the thermostat housing in order to gain enough access to replace the hose. I have not yet done one but I also understand that the hose ends are two different sizes, meaning simply cutting off a length of standard hose won't work.

I have heard of someone, after removing the old hose, cutting one of the metal ends to gain enough room to slide a new hose on..... but again I have not done this myself.

As Haasman says, it can be done without removing the thermostat housing. Your best bet is to get a good brand stub hose such as one you'd get from the dealer. Generic branded hoses don't always fit well.

You can wrestle the old hose off but it's simpler to cut it off.

Give the new hose a hot bath to make it flexible then apply silicone lube (not petroleum based lube!) to the insides of the hose and the pipe extending from the head. With luck, you'll be able to wrestle the new hose into place. If not, others have trimmed as much as a half inch off the pipe that extends from the head without causing leaks. Debur the pipe so you don't tear the new hose. Don't forget to get the clamps on the pipe before fitting the new hose!

Good luck.

Another reason to get the MB hose at the dealer is that they are much more flexible than aftermarket. Not a big deal for other hoses, but in this case it may make the difference.

thank you for the response guys. I had to hold my hand up on this one and leave it unfinished Unfortunately. He will call someone to pick it up and do it the right way-- the H2O pump needs to move back to gain enough access to slide the 2.5 inch hose in...tsk, tsk,tsk.... In my opinion-- This IS a bad design . Again, thanks
