We didn't get an E220 in the US - not sure about Canada. You might do a search for "C220". The 94 to 96 C220 got the 111 engine - generally a well regarded engine.

Don't know much about the G111 except it's 16v. I guess they made that engine for the C-class, as all the other 124/201 cars had M-code 102, 103, 104 engines...

I'm fairly sure it should be M111. That's the DOHC 16V engine family of gasoline fours. They are durable little guys that are not known for high power outputs, but are reliable and long lived. With big double row timing chains and generous oil capacities, they seem to last a long time without major work. I've met a few C220 owners with nearly 500K and the little M111 is still tight and strong.

One "leak" point is the valve cover gasket, which is a bit of a pain as a DIY job. Replaced mine recently. Be careful not to overfill the crankcase when changing the oil, or you'll break the main seals. The front is easy to do thanks to engine bay room, but of course, the rear is tough. Who put that tranny in the way, anyway?

Serpentine belt tensioners are another wear item. I've done one, and know folks that have done a couple. Replace the shock at the same time. The actual belt lasts a long, long time.

Like many other MB's, the Air Mass Meters are failure prone. It seems that you can extend the life by changing the engine air filter often. I got 162,000km's out of mine and my mechanic thinks it's because I change my air filter often. I did so to keep clean air going into the engine, but if it extends AMM life, bonus.

If you keep good clean oil and filters in the M111, it should outlast pretty much every other bit of the car. My car is just about turning over 170,000km's and the engine looks like new in the top end (looked when I had the valve cover off...) and has never used a drop of oil. At 158K the dealer did one last warranty inspection and the engine had a compression test and ran all four pots at new spec, all the same to .1 bar.
