E420 (124.034) optional transmission?
Greetings,
With my car starting to show it's age (not like a fine wine), I am reviewing options for a rebuilt transmission and new rear differential. The stock 4-speed transmission in my 95 E420 is the 722.366; given the differential plans and subsequent driving habits, I want the replacement to be over-engineered to handle stress. Has anyone transplanted a rebuilt 722.370 transmission from the 5-litre platforms into a 400E/E420? Would there be any measurable benefit (stronger widgets) to doing so? Copy of the ATSG manual is inaccessible at the moment. Thanks in advance, -DM |
The 722.3 transmissions are all simular in design, starting in 1981 here in the USA.
The only trans designed for any more TORQUE than your transmission is from the V-12 powered cars & they won't bolt to the V-8. How many miles are on the car? Transmissions & differentials should last the life of the car IF they are properly maintained. |

The car is crossing 162k miles, but has been well-maintained for the past 30k miles that I've owned it. Transmission shifts hard when cold (could be sticking valve) and demonstrates a nasty flare when the modulator was set past the halfway mark. I suspect worn clutches instead of the usual vacuum problems. The engine is slow to reach max speed when the kickdown switch is engaged, and occasionally "bogs" a thousand RPM after it does. The differential mounts and flex disc are in great condition, yet the rear end occasionally "slams" into gear. I have read this could indicate pinion lash requiring a differential rebuild. One of those cases where I either pay up front or have my wallet shredded to death by a thousand paper cuts ;-) What do you think? -DM |
i don't u can swap it from the 500E and such because the housing is also wider
i remember reading thats the reason the 500e has only 2 seats in the back |
