Troubleshooting Tranny, and pics

My tranny has been leaking and I think I may have found the source. The bell is clean as is most everything until the pan. Everything under the pan is red and slimey. I found what I believe to be the modulator, (on the right side of the tranny with the white vacuum hose going into it) and there was no fluid going up the hose. I found this part towards the rear of the tranny and it seems to be the highest point thats got fluid on it, hence is what I suspect to be the culprit. Can anyone tell me what this part is and how difficult it would be to replace? Also would this part continue to leak if the car has been sitting on jackstands for 2 months or should I look for something else?

This car is a 1988 560SEL. I believe its a 722.3## tranny but unsure of the specific P/N.

Any help is much appreciated!

That part is your speedometer pick up sensor; it has a rubber ring on it. It should only leak when the car is running/ moving. It will not leak when the car is park since its higher then the fluid level in the pan. The transmission vent is right on top; it’s plastic, check it if you think your leak is in that area. If the transmission is over filled the vent will leak. The reaction valve, modulator and servo cover o rings are another common cause of leaks when the car is park for long periods of time, just above the pan. Clean that area well then check it. Also your shift leakage grommet, bushing is bad

C32AMG thanks for the reply. Actually, something just hit me. I have the front up on jack stands, but the rear is on the ground. Would this incline cause a leak at that point? The front tires are about 2 inches off the ground. I'll go back under and take another look. My maintainance CD seems to be light on tranny info. Would you have a resource you can point me to which would describe the parts and functions preferably with diagrams?

Thanks again for the reply!

I lied, what I thought to be the modulator was on my other right, ie the left side of the tranny. I think I may have found the culprit. I have ALOT of oil coming from around the dipstick/filler tube and surrounding area. Theres also a reddish/orange boot which holds a pipe of some sort. I didn't trace it to where it goes, but it goes up towards the engine compartment. These pics are going to be at funky angles since it's hard to for me to hold the camera still while on my back head at the transmission, feet out the front, taking a picture towards the rear :) At least I have the header pipe still dropped!

While these may be upside down, these photos are from the front passenger's side of the tranny looking back. Also, it is a 722.323 however I'm sure ya'll probably had that figured out :)

Anyway, can anyone help identify components, espeically the white line that up from the reddish/orange fitting? It doesn't just pull out like a vacuum tube.

I'm going to try wipeing everything down and tightening up the bolts holding the filler/dipstick tube. I suspect I may have rocked it too much pulling the heads from the engine, but this beast was leaking before I pulled it out of service.

Thanks for the advice!

If the front of the car were up, the speed sensor, tail gasket and kick down solenoid can leak. If the sensor is leaking remove it carefully they can break $$$$. I do not have a resource that I can direct you to, do a Google search under Mercedes Benz Transmissions. My best advice is to spray the transmission down with a cleaner, drive the car for a couple of miles then pick it up and check for leaks.
