Psycho blower fan (124)

Blower fan comes and goes.

Usually will not operate at all on cold mornings. Then, 5-10 miles into my commute, the climate control will start clicking furiously (relay click?), and the fan will eventually kick in and stay on.

Then I'll take a sharp turn, or hit a bump, and fan will pause for an instant, or even a few minutes.

I've checked the fuse and related wiring. Also checked other related fuse for climate control.

Does this smell like a failing relay? Any experiences like mine?

Blower regulator

There's also a blower motor regulator that you could check. I'm not sure what the failure mode is for this part, but I do know that it's a common failure item.

It looks like (from pictures) a power resistor and perhaps an included relay.

Hmmm. Few takers. My feet are getting cold.

I've ruled out the fan itself. The thing operates when cold with 12v on it, so it's something in the Climate Controls.

It will not run when cold. Not even the defrost. The colder it is, the longer it takes to start operating. It's not the engine temp that predicts operation. It seems to be the cabin temp, or some other factor.

Once something reaches a certain temperature, the climate control starts to kick in. It starts/stops/start/stops, then eventually stays on for the remainder of the trip. During the 'trying to start' period, there is a clicking noise each time it kicks in, and the light on the recirc button flashes with each click.

What in the system could be temperature dependent to this extent?
Is there a vacuum component to this? The vac pump seems to be working. The door locks work when cold, for example.

I experienced the same problem a few years ago.
I took the CCU out and resoldered the connections where the pushbuttons connect to the circuit board. It was a cold solder problem, in some of them I could actually see the crack in the solder.
No problems since then.

My 0.02 cents.

Interesting. Were all of the buttons inoperative at once, or did just some of them fail? None of them do anything in my failure mode.

Probably time to resolder the climate control switches.
