I've driven one a couple hundred miles, lots of shifting-very narrow power band, not a bad drive. 2004's said to have a wider power band more drivable?

best 4cyl engine in production
early years had transmission issue ( or was it clutch? )
2004 saw supsension changes, prior years set up snappy oversteer
honda has no plans to design a replacement.

Larry - Are you aware that hondashop.com *is* a valid URL?! It looks like a big dealer of ATVs, motorcycles, etc. Nothing about the S2000 though...

Of the car I know only what I've read in the press. It's quite an uncompromising classic sports car. Expect a stiff ride, lots of noise, little storage space. I'm sure it's a blast to drive, but could also get old if used as an only car or on a long trip.

My wife came with a Miata when we married. As much as she loved it, she was ready for a new car inside of three years. The Miata, like the Honda, is quite uncompromising. It's a wonderful driving machine. But it's not so good at transporation - carrying golf clubs, going shopping, droning down the interstate, taking the dog to the vet, going out with more than one friend. You give up a lot to get what these cars offer.

A buddy had one for 2 years...the spectacular engine whine at 9000 rpm never got boring, however the whining of other drivers about the cornea-burning (on low-beam) headlamps when he came up behind someone did get boring.

I would never buy an S2000.

It's not that they are a bad car. I'm sure the quality is fantastic.

The engines in this car are so low on torque that you have to flog them...thrash them like you would never feel comfortable doing. The power band is just way, way too high in the rpm range.

Aren't these the engines that do not redline until about 8000-8500 RPMS?

I think they are nice.

From what I have heard, early S2000 engines imploded from a poor design that couldn't fully withstand the high pressures and revs inherent to the nature of the car. Later versions have been improved for durability and last longer.

As others have said, you have to rev them to the moon to get the power, so if you like a motorcycle engine in your car, you're "go" for an S2000. If you're a V-8 low-end grunt type of person, an S2000 isn't going to float your boat -- you'll get the feeling that you're going to rev it right off of its mounts.

Have to say one thing, those S2000s work HARD for the power they produce.

Cheers,
Gerry

I think Honda should turn the drivetrain in the S2000 backwards and put the boxer six from the Goldwing in the back. It'd be a Japanese version of a '70s 911 the same way the Miata is a Japanese Elan.

I think the Japanese will come round to producing their versions of every other car ever made, eventually

I quite like the idea of an S2000. The only downside seems, if you're going to have a no-compromise sports car, you won't use it all the time and there's no need for the Japanese reliability, so you might as well go for something with a bit more character (Lotus Elise.. or even Elan!)

The production of this car will seize in 2006.
Lack of sales.

If you're a real "driver", it's one hell of a driver's car, but not for everyone.
