Malaysian Spec 124's

Yesterday at my MB Parts dealer, I had the opportunity to peak over his shoulder at his EPC. He entered my chassis # (WDB 124 026 6B 777 708) with some rather interesting results.

Firstly my car is equipped with the "Special Offroad Package" and the "Suspension for Higher Ground Clearance". Does anyone know, apart from the springs, what else would be different on the suspension between regular 124's and my 'gravel spec' rally machine?

However, the prize option were the "bi-xenon lights with curve, for right" (or something to that effect). On a '92 W124. Must have been an error on his EPC, though I wish it wasn't

Cheers,

P.

Accurate...

Kaz,

I very much appreciate you looking that up - its really nice to get this personalised info on my very own MB. Also, this description also sounds a lot more accurate than the one my parts dealer brought up.

Out of interest, what did you use to look up this info? I am thinking of investing in the appropriate CD.

Thank you again & happy holidays.

Cheers,

P.

What the heck is "heat-insulating glass"? Sounds like an option a lot of us drivers of old MB's with dysfunctional AC could use...

Alex,

I wish I could tell you - unfortunately this option is part of the Deleted Items for Malaysia package, as to qualify for CKD status MB has to use some local parts, one of them being local glass. Which is clear, cr@p & has no heat resistent property whatsoever. I have resorted to the standard method of applying 'heat-resistant' tinting film instead for some respite from our tropical sun/heat.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

P.

Your 482 option is basically different springs (taller) and shock absorbers (stiffer) to raise the height of the car and to make it ride better on non-paved road surfaces.

According to the local dealer, my W124 wagon has at least eight different original factory mounted front shocks and seven different spring setups. All depends on the type of suspension the car originally came with (standard, raised, sport, etc, etc) and even the number and type of extras that were fitted. One example: a car equipped with air conditioning would use a completely different shock and spring setup that a car equipped with A/C.

In the option lists I have from the dealer, it lists about twelve different setups for window types and treatments to be installed on W124s (same for W140s, et.al). They vary from a combination of laminated and non-lamited safety glass, tinted and non-tinded glass and windshields, etc, etc, etc. In some models the intensity of the tinted color can also be varied.

Thanks Kaz. I think it only works for euro-vin cars. Still great to have!

Hello,
You guys are getting excited over nothing.
ALL manufacturers, Audi, BMW, MB etc. have dozens of spring/damper combinations and this goes WAY back to cars like my dad's 1954 170DS.
Tropical spec shock absorbers, anyone?
Sounds like they probably added an extra coat of paint
I got *RALLYE* spec springs for an Opel Manta A from Russelsheim about fifteen years ago, the car was very low at the front and harsh(ridding on the bump stops). The springs were shorter but stiffer and the ride was transformed and no more skipping sideways over mid corner bumps. Of course, it had Bilstein Sports dampers all around to keep all four tyres glued to the tarmac.

It is not just glass, but isn't it supposed to be 70% local content?
Of course, DC applies for a special waiver, so the seats have not had to have the coconut husk cushions and no local lamp units
I thought the MSG glass was tinted, new cars now have a 30% tint as standard, even if it is MSG(Malaysian Sheet Glass Ltd.)suppiled.
Have a good holiday

Tropen

Nachi,

Interestingly enough, the Bilstein dampers fitted to my car are tropical spec.

Agree with the multiple-multiple spring/damper combinations available - need to find EPC to get the correct item. Hopefully my derrier will find a difference in the ride after I change my springs tomorrow.

Happy holidays to all.

P.

The glass I have are of the MSG circa 12 years ago, and are certainly clear (assuming my eyesight hasn't totally gone to pot).

I just installed a new front windscreen, also MSG, and their quality is vastly improved. Now with E mark + attendant quality, and also a nice mild green tint

Thank God for these small mercies...
