Red face Parktronic Help Needed

I have gone over my "new" 99 S600 and brought it up to snuff with the exception of the parktronic system. When the ignition is turned on, the system lets out a long beep, the two red lights on the indicators light up along with the frame, and after a few seconds, it shuts itself off. Turning it on again results in the same problem. The DVD manual that I bought from MBNA only describes this as a "self test" that indicates that there is a failure someplace - no further information or diagnostic procedures.

Does anyone know if an adept DIYer with an electronics background can troubleshoot the system and how to go about it - isolate the problem to a component at least?

TIA

The owner's manual on my car describes your parktronic behavior as a malfuction warning. The dealer service manager here tells me that usually it is a plugged sensor (not cleaned properly) or a sensor which has been hit hard and rendered inoperable.

Cleaning or changing the bad sensor should cure the problem. If not, then the ECU of the parktronic system should be changed. Before doing this, check for improperly attached or cut cables inside the bumper assembly (maybe from a previous fender bender).
