I am pretty mechanical but do not really have the time to do the work in addition to it being 20 degrees in my NY garage. I feel this guy knows a lot more then me when it comes to mercedes but I hat to replace something that may not need to be....Need more input.
What is your oil pressure? If it is "1" at idle, you have all the classic symptoms of a blown tube. If you look at the cam yourself, you can see weather it need polishing or not. I found no evidence of the cam needing to be polished on mine and I drove it for a week. As far as the garage goes, it was 24 degrees here in sunny Texas when I did mine. A little electric space heater does wonders. Check out www.baxnet.net/merc/oilguides/story.htm.

Cheers,
Steve
P.S. It is your money that you are saving. Before I bought my S500, an indy told me about this problem and for a mere $1k. they could fix it!

Well, took it apart and some oil guides are missing the caps. Will replace them, but I didn't buy them before hand since I was going to inspect what else I might need after taking the valve covers off. Will report back.

Jim, it was your post that gave me the understanding, I just waited for this weekend to start the job. Your site and your expertise are the "rosetta stone" of the W140 realm, I apologize if my failure to mention your post seemed disrespectful.

PS. Looking now I did thank you in my post on 12-29.

Wink It worked, it was the oil guides

Thanks guys, replaced the oil guides & the noise is gone. I would have never thought such a loud tick would go away with such a minor repair. Replace all of the on the passenger side. Runs like new.
I was questioning it because I didn't have the oil pressure loss that you guys were talking about.
Well, I could have been taken for a ride if I let somebody fix it... without checking with you guy... Thanks Again!!!!

Thumbs up yes it did it...but

I had the mechanic do it, He hit me for $500. I thought it was steep but it was done so I did not say a word because it was a lot less than what i thought it was going to be with a new cam and valves etc....when I aquired the car??? . About two weeks after I pulled up next to a van with my window down , I could here the echo of my NEW tic tic tic...Here we go agian ....I got home popped the hood and sure enough it was coming from the drivers side now!!! Feeling pretty crappy about it and thinking.$$$$$ I ordered the parts online and decided I could do the other side myself.
Since I'm in NY, I waited till it got warmer..last week and I did it. It took me less than two hrs and is now quiet as a mouse.
When the mechanic did it two of the caps were off, when I did it one was missing. It is amazing that an engine tic can be that loud and be such a minor repair. Thank you K6JRF, Your pages on your S500 were key
