95 S420 Power Steering hose leak fixed.
It is not an easy DIY task, in spite of some posts that say its an easy "15 minute" job. I worked on it about 4 hours, part of that time was searching and fabricating a replacement for a 12mm allen tool, and a small external Trox socket needed. ( I used a screwdriver small socket instead)
MB dealer asks 2hrs labor for the hose replacement. Bill would be around $240.00. According to the one dealer I asked it is not a Starmarked covered item. "Hoses and belts are not covered". Someone on a post on this forum said "all fluid leaks are covered items" ?? Who knows ? Anyway here are the parts needed on 95 S420: 129-466-01-80 cannister gasket 006-997-09-82 6" of proper hose ( will make 2 ) Q-1-46-0001 MB PS fluid (quart) you need only abt 1/3 qt. (2) 005-997-45-90 hose clamps 119-997-00-45 Sealing "O" ring for return line on cannister You may also need an alum washer under the cannister stub , but I did not know about that and made do with my original. I have some pictures but have never posted pictures before and also files may be too large to post here. Do a search for poster rsmcmahon in Nov 2004 he answered my request with detailed step by step and some pictures which helped me a lot. I understand that this is a common problem on 8-10 yr old cars, the rubber gets hard from heat expansion and contraction causes the hose to leak internally. Sometimes just tightening the clamps slows it down, but it will return later. Also be sure the 12mm Allen inside the canister is tight on its alum. washer. (but remember these threads are cut in aluminum--don't strip it !) Luck to you if you decide to DIY. DanielW |
