Help - Mass airflow sensor removal 92 400E

My 92 400E went into ASR fault mode and isnt clearing on restart. I'm planning on cleaning the throttle plate etc befor throwing $$$ at a new trotle actuator.

The problem I'm having is removing the Mass airflow sensor. I loosened up the clamp (almost completely undoing the clamp, there is lots of free space under the clamp) but the housing isnt comming free. It will rotate a few degrees in either direction (were it hits the stop on the plastic fitting it goes iinto) but it doesnt come up! I gently pried a bit at the top aluminum flanges of the airflow housing but it didnt really move.

I searched the archives and checked the removal procedure from the manual. Is there a trick to this?

ASR problem happening when cold an no throttle
Just FYI the fault codes are initally
pin 6 13, 30
pin 7 3, 14
pin 8 9

cleared all codes and restarted car ASR light on
pin 6 30
pin 7 14

Thanks for any help

You've done the hard part, now you need to buy a new "boot" before you remove it. Its the old hard dried up boot that is causing the resistance. You just have to man handle it to get it off. Take the screw driver and cut it off the TBA, sort of like when you have a hose that you can get off a fitting....that what the problem here is.
You 92 had ASR??? Man am I glad mine doesn't.
Do you have a check engine light too?
My 500E has both a check engine and ASR fxn.
The 92 400E has neither. Guess which one I think is better?

Thanks for the input. Time to use brute force on the boot.

Yea my 92 400E has ASR but no check engine light (I believe that was CA only). I replaced the engine wiring harness soon after I got the car (about 1 year ago) the original one was crumbling so I know the harness is not a source of codes. I'm hopeful cleaning the throttle body will allow everything to work. From the archives it sounds like the throtle actuator problems usually are associated with heat. My ASR limp home mode occurances have occured on cold engines with 0 throttle.

In the meantime I'll drive the 84 300SD 320+K mi and still ticking :)

I got a really good deal on the 400E so I'm not to upset about the repairs. So far;
Wiring harness
Viscous fan clutch (self destructed and took out the radiator)
Radiator (gawd this was a bear, no room between rad and fan clutch, had to undo lots of the fron end to get clearance to put the radiator in)
Blower motor resistor

Also looks like you went really big on your tires. I'm planning on getting some 16" rims and tires (hopefully spring summer time)
