mystery EHA leak cured itself?
After Christmas I drove my wifes 300TE and noticed the strong smell of gas, I removed the air cleaner and noticed a steady drip from the EHA unit. After doing a search most people suggested that the O rings would be a waste of time and my local dealer even suggested that a complete fuel metering unit was the only cure! at £1100 I DONT THINK SO. So when I returned to work I bit the bullit and ordered the new EHA at £103, my wife had to use the TE everyday last week and complained that the smell was getting worse every day untill Thursday then the smell had disappeared? I thought maybe she had just become accustomed to the smell, but I drove the car and the smell had gone. So on Saturday I removed the air cleaner and ran the car for 20mins with no fuel leak what so ever? so I didnt risk fitting the new part as the car runs OK. So can anyone explain how the leak can cure itself or am I going mad? Regards Linds

EHA Leak
I drove my '88 260e for about a year with a leaky EHA (it was a very slight leak). My leak seemed to come and go also. During hot weather the smell was most noticeable.
I finally replaced the EHA to cure a hesitation problem and wish I had not waited so long because the car ran and started better with the new EHA. I believe that if the EHA is leaking, it has failed internally and will not function correctly so I suggest you replace it. |

If you allow fuel to leak from anywhere, just make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy!

I've had my EHA off my 260E a couple of times. If it's the O-rings leaking, it's an easy fix. Fastlane has the exact O-rings for a couple of bucks. If it's the EHA itself (unlikely) ... good luck.

Yeh like I say I have already spent the hard earned ones on a special ordered new EHA from Bosch, but I cant believe that a petrol leak can cure itself? I am little loath to disturb the old unit because the car starts and runs fine and knowing my luck I will end up with some running problem after fitting the new unit! Wierd?????

Replacement of EHA
I think you made a wise choice to get a new EHA and replacement is fairly simple. It is pretty much plug and play and no tuning adjustments should be necessary.
Hey, if anything goes wrong you still have the old one! |

Can anyone direct me to a picture of what the EHA looks like? I have the occasional fuel smell.
