... and engine timing? I read somewhere that the engine temperature sensor contributes to the engine timing via the ECU? Is this correct?

I am hunting down why the old 190e continues to ping even in relatively mild temperature days (50-60 degrees)

IIRC the 3.0 and 2.6 have a lower CR (9.2) than the 2V 2.3 (9.0:1), but the 2.3s larger bore will increase the tendency to detonate.

Assuming you're using 87 PON fuel, you may have no choice but to use 89 if there is more than just occasional transient detonation.

Those engines were supposed to use Super Unleaded Gasonline or 91+ Octane. My 1986 has a lower compression of 8:1 so it only needs regular. It should say on your fuel gauge that you need Premium Unleaded Gasoline. That is what the gauge I have from a 1987 says. And yes the 1987+ 190E's use KE-III mechanical fuel injection and it control timing. You will see the little computer on the drivers side fender well. There should also be a 2 Prong or 4 Pin temp sensor on the engine at the rear of the sensor bank on the drivers side front of the head. Do a search for Water Temp Sensor to find the values it must read to be within spec. I have posted them here about a half dozen times.
