Should I lube new Fuel Injector Seals?

Hi,

I'm going to replace the O-Rings, bases and rubber seals around the base of my injectors in my 1988 560SL because I suspect a vacuum leak around them. Can anyone tell me if any lube is recommended on the new seals and rings or should they just be installed dry? I have always used generic "white lube" (lithium grease) on similar o-rings and seals and the manual does not give any guidance...any thoughts???

Thanks,

Marty

Just give them a shot of silicone spray lube.

Never install a seal dry. Oil, lithium grease, silicone.... anything but dry.

Silicone lube on injector seals

I'm not experienced in replacing the injector seals but I have read that it is a bad thing to introduce any silicone into the engine. The silicone poisons the O2 sensor. This is why RTV sealants will state if they are O2 sensor safe and contain no silicones.

Also is the seal rubber the kind of rubber which is harmed by grease?

Maybe someone can comment on this.

Thanks for the tips...I'll continue to use a little lithium grease!

A dab of motor oil works just fine.

Your engine does not ingest lithium or silicone.

Yes you certainly should lube, good ol petroleum jelly works a treat. Every mechanic has a jar of this in there tool box. :)
