My guage "flickers" when my tank gets near 1/4 full. I understand that this is caused by a dirty fuel sender contact, but there is a separate switch to activate the "R" light. When my "R" light goes on, I'm down to a little over a gallon left in the tank, so I know it's time to fill up at that time. I keep a spreadsheet of my fuel consumption, so I have a feel for how long I can go on a tank, and I seldom am more than 20 miles from a station that sells diesel. Hope this helps,

I had the same flickering problem in my 92 500E. I recently added a bottle of STP "Complete Fuel System Cleaner" to the gas and the flickering seems to have stopped. I don't know if it is truly fixed but a couple of months has gone by without me noticing the flickering. Might be worth a try before pulling the sender.

You have a dirty fuel sending unit. To access it, remove the first aid kit box,(a couple of screws in the bottom). Then, disconnect the plug the attatches to the sending unit. Take a large socket, I think it's 44mm and unscrew the unit.
SLOWLY, withdraw the sending unit allowing fuel to drain completely. A couple of shop rags are a good idea to protect your seats. Cleaning takes alot of care. there are some delicate wires that the float slides up and down on. There is a description of this procedure @ http://www.mbz.org. But their removal procedure that called for removing the seats didn't prove to be correct for a 123 or a 126. Good luck,
