"98 E320 License plate bulb removal

Can someone tell me the procedure for removing the license plate bulbs on this car? I removed the 3 philips screws that hold the metal trim over the light lens--tried to pull the lens from the outside of the car--they won't come out. What's the trick??

Put the plate back!

You have to start inside the trunk and work towards the outside of the car.
