Fuel Filter Washers

Hello all,

I got my fuel filter today,

but it did not come with new copper washers... does anyone know where I can get 2 of these?

Maybe Home Depot?

The washers are a separate part number. You can get them at any MB dealer.

I bought the filter from Phil here at FastLane.

The dealership gave me no problem at all with the washers.

missing copper washer on fuel filter 450sl (1977)

Same thing happened to me! Dealer parts dept not always taking time to instruct and result, missing paarts@!! I used the old washers (since I had the car up on lift stands, etc) and was fortunate that they did not leak. Alsways check parts ordred that they have completee add on parts! Ex: Crossover exhaust pipe, no special clamp included, have to ask for it! (guess what, not in stock, need to order seperately!) Once you have gone through this route, you watch out! Regards, Abe G

Copper washers can be reused if you heat them red hot and let them cool in air. This softens the copper. I have been doing this for years. As a matter of fact, I changed the oil in my Porsche yesterday. It was the 5th time the copper oil plug gasket was reused. No leaks occurred.

Matter of fact, I replaced the fuel filter on my 400E about a month ago and reused those washers - they were copper. There was/is no leakage.

It's a lot easier to just dress down both sides on a piece of mineral spirits wetted 280-400 paper on a flat surface. This will eliminate the galling that occurs from the previous sealing.

Any copper seal ring can be "refurbished" this way several times before it begins to get a bit thin.

I wonder if it would be easier/cheaper just to change the 20 cent washer.

How much does one spend on mineral spirits/sand paper to clean the 20 cent washer?

Thanks for your wonderful insight and contribution. Forget what I said - especially if you're in the middle of the job and you don't have the seal rings you thought you did or find out that you need some you didn't think you'd need.

Drop everything you're doing and run out and find them. If it's a Sunday or you don't have another car available - good luck!
