shock question

i have a 190e 2.3 16v (cosworth)the rear shocks are shot. the prob is that this model has self levelling shocks which cost a darn fortune (they are joined together via oil) has anyone done away with this and put ordinary shocks on regards ken

Quite a few 16 valve owners have blocked off the SLS pump and replaced the rear shocks with Bilstein HD's and installed Sportline rear springs. If you planned on any further lowering with springs, then the switch should be to the Sport shocks/struts.

What is your symptom?

The shocks rarely fail. The nitrogen accumulators do and they cost about as much as a shock.

rear shocks

well the drivers side (right hand drive) is leaking and the near side. is banging when i hit a pothole etc. look like it is shot as well

As D2B said, the accumulators are usually what fails. They can be purchsed from our host for $114 (US) each.

If you change out the rear to a more coventional setup. the shocks are going to run you about $100 each and the springs less than $100.

If you choose that route, get the sportline springs for a 190e and get the Sport Bilsteins to match the front Sports. Ride is not too bad.

From what I have read, when the SLS is working correctly, it is a good compromise between ride and handling.
