Solved intermittent stall problem

:)
After 9 months of intermittent stalling when slowing down to a stop, or worse, stalling when slowing to go round corners, fixed the problem: cleaned idle control valve. Of course I found this solution by searching this forum. Car is 1985 MBZ 380SE. This was 6 weeks ago, hasn't stalled out since. I've also noticed the idle RPM now only drops to about 525 RPM when slowing down, it used to drop to about 400 before recovering.

Nice work man! :)
You saved yourself a lot of money! ;)
AND YOUR CAR WORKS!!!! :D

I have a problem with stalling right now....
When I start it, but don't touch the accelerator on a cold morning, with the engine cold as well, it sometimes idles at like 450 to 500, but if I tap the accelerator, it will start surging and then die. But it starts right back up...???

It always idles around 500!

I will replace the OVP soon,
I tried to clean the idle control valve, a lot of brown liquid came out after I carb cleaned it! YUCK!
But still have the same problem...

Do you have any tips for me?
Thanks in advance! :hair:

Hi Rahulio

Sorry, I'm really pretty ignorant as to how all this mechanical engineering works....hopefully someone will stop by on this thread and help.

I did notice that when I pulled the electrical connection off the ICV (as a test to see what happens) the idle was high (can't remember, I think it was 1000 rpm or maybe more...was a while ago)

Perhaps a brand new ICV would do it (it seemed reasonably priced at Fastlane, outrageous at the MBZ dealer  ) I've also seen posts where people replaced the Idle Control Electronics module

Hopefully someone who knows more than me will post...

Check for vacuum leaks, especially the idle control valve hoses (they should be soft). A big leak there will cause stalling due to lack of fuel at closed throttle since the air isn't going through the meter flap.

You must clean the idle control valve until the solvent come out clean -- this takes a while.

If it stalls while running instead of ONLY when coming to a stop, replace the fuel pump relay.

Thank you! I will try to find a vaccum leak first.... :)
