Engine ID
 

I have a 1975 450 SL. I was getting ready to order a few parts for the fuel injuectors and FastLand asked for the engine ID range. Where do I find the engine ID? Are they the numbers on the door jam after the 107044? Those numbers match numbers stamped on the cross piece in front of the radiator, however are different than numbers on a plate on the same cross piece.

It will either be 117.983 or 117.986, look for one of the two listed numbers. :)

The easiest thing to do, if you have the original papers with the car, is to check in the warranty (or maintenance?) book in the back and look for a piece of paper called the "wartungsheft" (warranty sheet) has all the numbers for things like this incl. the engine numbers. Barring that I am not toally certain where the engine number is stamped into the block. Possibly behind the left cylinder head on the deck of the block.

Those are the engine model numbers and they won't work. He needs the serial number of the engine, not just the model.

Doug, have you tried calling a Benz dealer and providing your VIN? They can call up your engine # from your VIN.

No I haven't tried calling anyone. I have an aftermarket repair manuel that says it is on the rear left side of the engine, however I haven't been able to find it and didn't really know how accurate the book was anyway. I will try your suggestion.

The M-B system will not give engine # based on VIN for
early cars--- later cars, yes. 79 or 80 seems to be the break.

The eng # on Sl's is a real joy to find.

Behind the left(driver side) valve cover, stamped into the top of the engine block.
Put a cover on the fender, take off your belt, stick your head way up toward the hood/windshield union, and peer down, then get out, grab a flashlight,
and do it again. You will find it covered in sludge.
Then get some brake cleaner/degreaser/solvent of your choice, squirt some in your eyes and some on the suspect area.
A rag on the end of a long, skinny screwdriver is sometimes of help.

Alternative--
Green and tan sticker stuck to the rear of the fuel tank,
behind the felt/cloth cover/trim panel. Accessible through the trunk.

{On early sedans(116/123) this is often stuck to the bottom of the rear seat.}

The factory glued the "build tag" there on the SL's.
All the same info as on the warranty card--
Paint and interior codes,
Engine/trans and serial numbers.
