transmission maintenance
I am looking to replace my auto trans oil in my 92' 190e shortly, and would also like to replace the filter. It seems like it will be an easy job, am I correct? and is there anything I should know before doing so?

1 - drain the torque converter while you're at it. You may need to turn it (via turning the engine/flywheel) to access it.
2 - make sure to seat the gasket properly and torque the bolts evenly. Basically a straighforward, if somewhat messy, procedure.

Don't over tighten the trans pan bolts or they will distort the gasket and cause a leak. Be sure you clearly understand that they are torqued with only a few foot pounds.
Check the bolt holes on the pan carefully for rounded or bent tabs. Often over tightened and can cause the pan not to mate properly to the transmission. When mating the trans pan to the transmission, make sure it is up and evenly against the transmission before tightening the bolts.... don't ask why I tell you this, the ATF trail down the road by my house is enough. Keep everything very clean, very very clean. Clean the pan out after removing the old gasket and look for shining metal bits (not good) and take note of how much dark gray sediment is in the bottom (indicates clutch wear). Proper fill cold is approximately 10mm (I believe) below the low mark on the ATF stick in the engine compartment. Only use MBZ filters and gaskets or ones such as that this site sells, in my opinion. Also, I like Mobil1 synthetic ATF, others may say standard dino type. There are too many opinions throughout this site, just like oil. Better to drain warm (not hot) than cold. Make a sticker on your door jam when you changed the ATF and filter to remind you. Have fun, Haasman

I'll be sure to tighten evenly and to the specified torque. Ill just go with what the manual says for type of oil.
Thanks a lot for the suggestions |

If your transmission is like mine, the manual says (after drain) to refill with 4 qts, start the engine, then add the remaining charge.
Tip: Measure the fluid that is drained out, so you can more accurately determine how much to refill.

Just wanted to say i succesfully changed the fluid and replaced the filter in about 2 hours. (can easily be done in under an hour)
I drained the torque converter as well, which is incredibly easy. $31 for the AT filter kit (includes gasket and filter) and $21 for the ATF. |
