Does anyone know how long the timing chain in the M104 engine will last? I have heard 100K miles is the recommended replacement maintenance.
Will I expect a huge repair bill? Should anything else be replaced or checked while doing the timing chain? Any Opinions or experiences? Thanks Tony |

I got about 85k on my 300CE. Something is making a rutling noise, sounds like a chain. I am taking it to the shop this wednesday. The tech said if it is the chain, than he'd rother replace it than just put in a new tentioner. He quated me $200 plus the price of the tentioner.

I believe that you have the M103 Engine - i do not know if the timing chain replacement recommendations are the same. I had heard M103 engines not needing chain replacements after over 150K miles. |

I got a question. When my car is cold and I start it I hear a clicking for all of 5 seconds then it goes away and doesnt happen until the car is cold again.
Would this be a sign the timing chain will need replacement soon? or is it just because of lack of oil in an area of the engine when its cold. I just want to make sure as to what it is or what it might be telling me. Thanks, Alon

IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS THE LIFTERS - ONCE THEY ARE LUBED BY THE CIRCULATING OIL IT GOES AWAY. IF ITS YOUR CHAIN MAKING THE NOISE THEN IT WON'T GO AWAY.
WHEN MY CAR IS COLD & TURN ON THE CLIMATE CONTROL RIGHT AWAY, I HEAR WHAT SEEMS LIKE WATER INSIDE THE VENTS. ANY IDEA WHAT THAT IS? TONY |

Same exact sound in my vents ( the center ones ). I thought it was the blower motor. Took the hole front of the car apart, got it out, oiled it. Sound is stil there. I am preaty much clueless now.

Yup, there's something definitely going on in there. But it still works. Maybe Benzmac knows. This sounds like a whole new thread

I recently post a question on the strange noise on my engine as well when the car has been sitting for a week and a half, but so far no one answered my question. My car sounded like its a diesel when I first started it. But after about 5-10 seconds, the noise went away. I was also wondering if the oil did not get to the lifters as well. Hope someone will shed some light on this one.

I think the water sound in the vents is probably the heater core opening up. Particularly so if it just happens in cold weather, I would imagine...

Follow up on both topicks
Ok, I got the car back yesterday. $340 for timing chain and chain tentioner replacement. Thats labor and parts together.
Now the question is - Is this too cheap ?! My roommate was amased since his Audi's timing belt was around $500 (just the belt and labor) That made me think that may be something is fishy here. Is this proces easier to do on MB's than other cars? As far as girgaling kit, I asked my tech and he said that they fix it without instaling it. The proces involves juking up one end of the car (front I think ) than opening some valve and leting the liquid out while the car is tilted upwards. That shoul eliminate the gigaling sounds.
