Coolant light

My coolant light came on this morning while I was on the highway. Pulled into a service area and had a mechanic looked at it thinking I must have a leak. Well, the tank is full. What can be the cause of it? Bad sensor? Where is the sensor? It is a '96 C280 Sport. Thanks for any idea.

BTW, the car had to be jump started as it had been sitting in the garage for a week. Is the battery on the way out? I think most battery can sit for weeks on end without needing a jump.

Do a search and you will find a post some months back about the windshield washer level sensor going bad and turning on the idiot light next to it for coolant level.

Read through all the related threads. Now where in the world is the coolant sensor? Again, it is a 96 C280 Sport. Thanks.

if your windshield washer level sensor isn't also on then what I am telling you won't help - concerning the windshield level sensor also turning on the coolant level sensor.
Most likely the coolanr level sensor is located either at the base of the coolant expansion tank or top of the radiator ( header tank )

Coolant level sensor is located in the header tank, 202 have a known fault where an air pocket can develop around sensor float which causes the light to come on, you need to run eng up to opperating temp and then accelerate car suddenly 5-10 times to speed of 3500-4000 rpm, stop and turn off, open cooling system only when coolant is below 90 c remove cap slowly and reduce pressure, top up to top off filler neck (completly full) with eng warm, refit cap. Repeat procedure if necessary.

OK, so what would the air pocket do to the system if not corrected? Will it cause other major failures? If it is only a faulty reading, I probably will just live with it.

Mercedes in their infinite wisdom have dualed the wiring to the CLS and the WWLS.....if the WWLS fails or the CLS, I change both with OE sensors.
The monitor senses potential between sensors and turns relevant light on....well that's what is supposed to happen

However, when a fault in one mimics a fault in the other, the wrong lamp illuminates.
So far had three MB's do this and cured with both sensors replaced.
