Transmission Information
Hi Everyone,
I wanted to post to this list to try and get some information about the 722.1 transmissions used in the late 70's to early 80's. I have an '82 Porsche 928 with the 722 Mercedes transmission. I am in need of overhauling the transmission and Porsche doesn't seem to have much help or interest in providing parts. I'm trying to find out as much as I can to locate the correct parts to do the overhaul myself. I just need your help to verify what Mercedes model the transmission really is so I can find an overhaul kit and other realated parts. The best place I know to start is with the numbers on the side of the transmission. The numbers are: Passenger side: 7222700301722 005 02 006790 Driver side: A22/01 16C 0399 (The Porsche owner's manual calls this trans an A22 so I suspect the driver side numbers to be Porsche numbers. But the dealer can't tell me from the info in their own books.) Also, if anyone knows the breakdown of the Mercedes numbers and what the numbers mean that would be a lot of help as well. If anyone knows of parts supplier knowledable in the 722's that would be great as well. The only one I've been able to find to supply a kit is Makco Distributing in Dilido, TX. (http://www.bulkpart.com) Just some info on the car. It's an '82 Porsche 928. 4.7 ltr V-8 water cooled. Mercedes trans mounted directly to the differential in the rear. The car has almost 200K miles on it. The trans has never been overhauled. It doesn't want to shift or shift properly until the fluid has warmed up. Once it does I have no complaints about its performance. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Steve Newport News, VA |
