On two different occasions, both after just starting my car ('79 300SD), I go directly on the freeway, and I hear a very loud, "old, fashioned, hand-crank, siren" sound coming from my instrument cluster. I assume it is the speedometer, which works perfectly. Any advice? I suppose I need to lube the speedo cable? The sound get's louder with increase of speed, and quieter after I exit the freeway.

I would suspect the speedo itself. The rotating magnet spins on a bushing that wears over time. The slack/end play is adjusted by the end stop. We keep the mounting assy in stock if you need it, bt usually lubrication and endplay adjustment solves the problem.

Thanks Steve,
Are there in directions to follow to adjust the endplay? Also what kind of lubricant should I use? Thanks This is about a '79 300SD with a 125 mph speedo. |
The end play is adjusted to zero; loose. In other words till play is just about gone; no play felt, no drag felt.
We use something specially designed for instrument lubrication. I will take a look at it tomorrow and make a recommendation |
