I have a 2000 CLK 430 Conv which has been trouble free. Yesterday on my way to work, after starting uneventfully and driving for 10 minutes, the car stalled. It would restart then die. No malfunction displayed on the multifunction screen. MB roadside assistance thought it was the key. Cleaning the key,etc did not help. Just as I was arranging a tow, it started. I drove to the dealer, who checked it over, states it was a bad key. I'm using my spare and waiting for a new key. Has anyone heard of this before? How common is it?

I have heard of this, but I have seen fuel pump(s) that have the same sort of problem.

I have a 1999 CLK 430 and just had the ignition switch and all the keys replaced because sometimes the car would not start when the key was turned. The dealer said that the computer recorded a fault so they ordered new keys and ingnition switch. it seems ok now.

Donnie,

What is the cure for this problem to get you home. Is there anyway to use the metal key to open something, then use the electronic key to run the car.

I don't expect to have any trouble, but I'm sure it would be helpful to all of us with electronic keys to know the get you home method. Is it in the manual?

Thanks and good luck to John V,
