95 C280 Egr

I have a 1995 C280. The check engine light is on. My code reader is saysing it is a EGR flow malfuntion. Any Ideas? If it is the EGR valve can anyone tell me where to find it on the engine? Thanks

not sure where it is on ur car and hopefully someone can shed light on that one (or just do a search on the forum) but from what i've seen the board the problem isn't the valve itself but the tube that goes to the valve that gets blocked causing the error code

ps welcome to the board

On my 1992 300SE, the egr is mounted on the top of the exhaust manifold with the tube snaking behind the head and under the intake manifold where it enters the intake manifold. I just replaced the tube, damaged while doing head removal, and at the intake manifold it attached to a brass fitting that screws into the manifold. The brass fitting was plugged solid with oily carbon (204K and a valve was done) from bad guides and seals causing a buildup. I cleaned the fitting and all is well.

The egr has a vacuum operated valve and the diaphragm will sometimes tear. Check it with a Mityvac. The red piece of vacuum hose that connected the plastic vacuum line to the vacuum pod on the egr valve is a special high heat hose and a minimum amount from MB is enough to do 10-12 cars and cost me $16.00. If yours needs replacement PM me and I will supply you with a replacement piece.

EGR valve

It is bolted to the exhaust manifold, rear of the seconday air valve (don't mistake the 2). Some 104 engines had their EGR updated due to sticking problems -- marked with a red dot.. so look for it.

To test valve apply vacuum to it at idle and if car stumbles/dies the valve is sticking and may need to replaced or cleaned. If nothing happens then your EGR tube is likely blocked with carbon and needs to be cleaned/replaced.

You can credit Arthur Dalton for this information -- he has written extensively on this topic.

Good Luck
