560SL, Is head gasket leaking oil?
Gentelmen
I have attached a picture of what I saw when I removed my Intake manifold to replace the left cylinder head. I'm removing the head gasket to fix what I thought was an oil leak from the cylinder head. I was expecting to find about a 1/2" puddel of oil under the intake manifold but as you can see its only wet. However I did find what appeares to be a drain hole in the back and I am wondering if someone could confirm that this is a drain hole. I have poked in it with a wire and it appeares to dead end. If it is a drain hole this is probably why I dont have a puddel. There does appear to be some resemblence of oil leaking in here but a lot less than what I have been finding on the floor of my garage. I would hate to pull a head for nothing. head is not leaking there
The head can still be leaking from the back.I think that is the most common leak point for the cyl heads(but leaks are not common) There can be a leak from inside the bellhousing from the sealing plugs in the back of the engine block. (and of course the rear main seal.)
