I just finished re-finishing. The ashtray trim piece is very thin and fragile. With the ashtray out of the car and in your hands you will see that the piece clips around the body of the ashtray at the bottom points. On mine it was also held on by staples. You'll see them. You can carefully pry the wood away and it comes right off. Leave the staples in place and on re-installing just gently squeeze them back into the wood.
