Does the '94-'00 C class,C280's, have a power steering filter and if so how is it replaced and is this a required service?

Yes there is a filter, on cars upto 1996. It's in the reservoir under the level indicator. Every 30k miles is a good time to replace ALL filters on that car! Very easy to replace. The later cars don't have a filter but should have the p/s fluid changed.

M.B.DOC, On the subject of p/s levels. I have an '80 300SD, and the p/s reservoir on my car doesn't have a "level indicator". I know on my father's '85 W123 there is a triangle piece of metal on the shaft in the center of the reservoir. However, on my car there is a spring (aprox. 2 1/2")on the center shaft. Currently the level is approx. 1/2" below the lip of the reservoir. I have a new filter to put in and want to change the fluid. What should I use as a full mark?

Rick, You should have a "line" on the inside front of your reservoir. It's kind of hard to see. I think that's where it is, maybe the '80 is different.

Patsy, I'll have to look at it more closely. I plan on sucking out the old fluid with a turkey baster and replacing it with new p/s fluid. When I do this I should see a line of sorts. I have concluded that my p/s sys. has p/s fluid, not ATF, in it. I bought a bottle of p/s fluid and it's gold in color, like the fluid in my reservoir.

You know what works better than a turkey baster? The pump
from a liquid soap dispensor.
I use this and it is controllable and neat.
Just use a small water bottle (plastic)
to collect the out-pump.
