how to Change front shocks
What is the best way to change the front shocks on my 1990 300E.

Jack up one side of the car at the front end.
Remove wheel. Then you have to compress the spring. That means moving the suspension up to approximate normal position when sitting on the ground. You can do this by stacking a couple of 4 x 4's under the control arm and then lowering the floor jack appropriately. I have also used a bottle jack to raise the suspension. Always use jackstands for safety. Inspect the shock tower mounts for cracking. Probably smart to replace to that age. After that unbolt the shock at top and bottom and remove it. Since these are gas pressure shocks, installation requires some leveraging to compress the shock in order to line up the bolt holes. Steve |
