W124 Water Pump?

Water pump problems...needs to be replaced. I am aware of three brands, Laso, Graf, Geba. Most say Laso is better one to get. Anyone know of an American Pump Manufacturer "APA", "NEW" pumps (not rebuilt). $119.00 from onlinme parts seller CarPartsDiscount????

Need to get a pump here soon? Any advise as to what brand pump to get. Saving bucks is good, but not always the best.

Thanks Cheers - G-Rod/bluzygent

Interestingly enough, the last time I went thru this(maybe 1999), I bought a new pump from an MB dealer for $100.00. Came with the MB STAR on it. Dealer won't take core pumps w/o STAR. All of the WEB sellers of the brands you mentioned wanted more $$$ than the dealer.

This isn't the sort of job you want to do again in 6 months.

Go buy the pump and gasket from your local MB dealer.

My 2 cents.

Just had the water pump replaced on my '92 124. I insisted on MB Pump for two reasons. First, I have read that other brands may not have equivalent design specs. Second, with the MB pump you have a factory warranty of
1 year, even if it is installed by a non-mb installer.

This part is too critical to try and say a few bucks.

But Mike's six years out of date on price. Plenty of MB prices and have doubled or tripled in the last six years. But I agree with the point - that if the dealer price on the rebuilt units is competitive it's a good way to go. It's just that few MB prices are competitive any more.

I used the GRAF, and it's doing fine.

I installed a Laso about a year ago. Still doing fine.

How many miles?

So how many miles have your water pumps lasted b4 changing? thanks

pesuazo 03-10-2005 09:20 PM

Mine was the original, and my car true mileage is unknown. I estimate over 200K.
I use the green stuff (coolant), and change it yearly.

brewtoo 03-10-2005 09:33 PM

About 190,000 miles on the original.

My original pump went about 250,000 miles. I would have to look in the logbook for the exact mileage.

It is a challenging job to replace it, so make SURE you get a quality pump. This is no place to skimp.

Good luck,

My 91 300E got its first water pump at 128,538 just under 2 months ago. Took me almost exactly 6 hours to do. Got the pump locally for $160.

 So how long did it take the others? 6 hours avg? I imagine is getting to the pump where the problem is. I don't have a water pump issue, at the moment :sun_smile fortunately... Let me not ask too much about it, LOL.

I have changed water pumps on my former GM vehicles and that long the first time :(
