Rear Disc Brake...Pistons

While changing my rear disc brake pads recently, I noticed the pistons, where they contacts the pads, have a raised section.
Never seen this before.
Anybody have any ideas for the reason of this design ?
If you look closely in the attached picture, you can see the raised portion.

This raised portion of the piston is designed for equal distribution and more targeted foot pounds that is designated for the symetrical design of the pad which is critical for applying pressure along the face section of the rotor
